COVID-19 (coronavirus) - How can I look after my older relatives?

Following the Prime Minister’s announcement earlier this week, people are advised to stay at home and avoid non-essential contact with others and to all unnecessary travel. This is especially important for older people who are more likely to become severely ill if they catch coronavirus, according to the NHS. In this post we wanted to look at a few recommended to keep elderly members of your family safe.

Food and necessities

Minimise contact your older relatives have with other people. Picking up supplies, like food, medication and other essentials, and running other errands would be a good idea! In doing so, don’t forget about hand hygiene practices!

No family gatherings

Aside from bringing essentials, avoid any large family gatherings. When visiting an elderly relative for an essential purpose, keep a distance of around 1 – 1.5 meters apart and no close contact such as kissing or hugging (sadly).

Keep in touch (remotely)

Probably all of us have that old, way out of fashion smartphone with cracked screen, stored away for a ‘just in case’ emergency. Well, it’s time has come – get it charged up, install a messenger of your choice and give it your elderly member of the family. Not only this will allow you to keep in touch, but will also help prevent loneliness during the self-isolation.

Keep an eye

Regularly check on (remotely) your relatives, especially those who are in the vulnerable group. Getting a simple battery-powered Wi-Fi video camera with two-way audio communication to do so is definitely a good idea. In this way, you can always keep an eye on your family to make sure that everything is ok!

As part of our own small contribution to helping with the crisis, starting from tomorrow (19 March) we will be offering a small range of products designed to help look after older and vulnerable people at cost (i.e. with no profit to us).
