One of our clients has recently been a victim of an attempted burglary whilst he was away on holiday skiing with his family. Fortunately, everything is ok – his house was equipped with a hybrid CCTV + intruder alarm system, so the thieves got scared off by the alarm when they tried to break in.
Whilst the police investigation is underway, the police officer dealing with the case made an interesting point.
Apparently, over the last couple of years there has been an increasing number of cases where the police found that certain taxi drivers were acting in cahoots with criminals, tipping them off when a house was empty. The most common scenario is when a taxi driver takes the whole family to an airport to go on holiday and, whilst making small talk, asks about where they are going and when they will be back. In 99.9% of cases, this is just it – small talk. However, there have been reported cases of taxi drivers tipping off criminals.
With that in mind, just a few tips that may save you from an unpleasant surprise upon returning from your holiday:
· use reputable taxi companies;
· don’t say how long you will be away for;
· mention that someone will be staying in the house whilst you are away;
· whilst probably a bit of an overkill, you can book a taxi using a house number a few doors down and be waiting outside.
